It’s Day 4 here at the Eurovision arena, and the second half of the second semi-final is getting their chance to perform on the Eurovision stage for the first time. There are some bookies favourites in today’s schedule, so it will be interesting to see how this pans out!
Montenegro
It’s certain to say that Montenegro definitely don’t have the best track record at Eurovision, but on the two times we’ve seen them in the final, it’s been with a Balkan ballad. This year, with a song of that genre, can Montenegro manage to qualify through to the final?
Visuals:
The performance opens with images of the pianist, and as the vocals kick in, we see the camera pan over to Vanja the lead artist. The lighting is for the most part in blue, with occasional accents of yellow.
This performance follows that typical Balkan style staging, where it’s both fluid and rigid. We see the four backing artists very well-choreographed, but as in the Serbian staging, the movements are often too rigid. For the most part I think the camera angles though are giving a good balance between close up shots and wider shots to encompass all the members on stage.
Costuming:
This is the tragedy of the day, as we’ve got such a solemn style of song, but yet we see Vanja performing with a very unappealing light blue suit that on camera looks like glitter. It feels very glitz and glamour, whereas this song isn’t in that style.
The backing singers however are in beautiful white dresses, all with different details, from sparkles to feathers. Costuming wise they got the backing right, but for Vanja, less than desirable or suitable.
Vocals:
Vanja is a strong vocalist, and we definitely got steady and strong vocals. He also gives good emotion through the song, which can be credited to the fact that this is a song written by him, so he knows the emotions he needs to convey. If it were to qualify, it would be qualifying on vocal ability, and definitely not on costuming.
